I think I'm pick up some probes For that TC while the shipping is free.

Before you do, look at these: http://cgi.ebay.com/Set-2-Type-K-Thermocouple-Probe-50-250-C-100cm-/140423955273

I bought a half-dozen and they look identical to the one that comes with the 7712.

That's amazing how they can do that.  If 1 cent wins the auction you will get 2 thermocouples for $4.50 US shipped.

 :o

I checked the calibration on all of them using the iced distilled water and boiling water methods. All were perfect, so sometime cheap IS good.

Hmm ... do you think the Chinese quality may be improving?

I think they may have figured out that having a cheap item sells ... but if you burn the customer once too many times the sales will come no more.

Says they are only accurate to 250c (482f).

At that point I wouldn't worry about it, start looking for a fire extinguisher! :violent5:

Not true. If I had the probe stuck in the bean mass I could get away with that temp range, but my RK Drum setup requires me to measure the  temps of the air surrounding the drum which can get much higher than 480f. Before I accidentally melted the plastic on the probe that came with the thermometer, I had temps that sometimes hit 650f+ when I would increase the heat.

Did probes come with your Thermocoupler from MCM? Mine did not, and I noticed within some other forums people said that they did receive probes with theirs.

Yeah, with one.

I like the temperature alarm. When it goes off, you toggle the primary display so the sensor reads on the secondary display, and the alarm stops.

The backlight's a nice touch, too.

Glad I picked one up.

Haven't really used the datalogging yet.

You guys use this for roasting I assume? I'm looking for a better quality thermometer and this one may fit. Curious, for those that use a SC/TO, where do you place the wire to get the bean mass temp? Or would a probe like the J type function well? Are they long enough?

Mainly for roasting but I had used it to monitor water temps when it first arrived. Hard to beat for the money, especially now that there is free shipping.

With my SC/TO setup I drilled a small hole through the side of the SC into the roasting chamber. I threaded the TC wire through the hole so the tip just barely sticks out in the roast chamber and secured the wire with some duct tape on the outside. You have to be careful that the SC arms don't hit the probe or they will keep reversing directions.
