New Burrs in my grinder
« on: October 30, 2013, 07:02:55 PM »
You know I've had this Santos commercial espresso grinder (killer grinder BTW... very quiet, well made).  I bought it about 5 years ago from a high school ..... anyway, when I bought it I looked at the burrs and they look to bad and it ground espresso pretty good but a little slow.  I always attributed the speed, or lack there-of to the quietness of the grinder.

I had been looking for burrs for a few years and the only place that carried them was Cafeparts, but they were $110 and 120 day lead time.... so back in July I finally ordered new burrs... and waited... 3 months later I emailed Cafeparts asking where my burrs were... they said sorry but those were no longer available..... but they had a new supplier and they were $30.... happy dance.

Weill in installed the new burrs last night and dialed in the grinder this morning..... wow is all I can say... a whole new espresso path...... fluffy, consistent grind and I'm about 4 or 5 steps from where the old burrs were.

The extraction was amazing this morning...... looking forward to more shots.

Oh, I found that an impact drill is a great way to remove the burr screws..... if you have one try it next time, or borrow or buy one.

Did you break them in using minute rice? I hear that is the fast path to quicker grinding and better extractions.

Just to be clear I had 4 coffees roasted to choose from and I chose Peter's harrar.... and drank every shot.... except the first one... I chose the one I thought would make the best SO espresso!!

I think it was a 2011 distro..... :)

BTW how do you clean them ? minute rice, corn flakes ? or a dedicated product  (personnaly I use corn flakes...)

30$ , I suppose it's a copy of the original , Santos is French and I suppose the burrs are more 120$ than 30$ , but if at 30$ the job is perfect it's the most important..

Me, I take it apart and use a brush....

The new $30 burrs are well made.... maybe they found some that are the same form factor.  We will see how they last.

If found running 50-75 g of instant white rice cleans them well. For a deep clean I use a nylon brush.  You can get a 3 brush set (nylon, steel and brass) for $3 at home depot.
