Aaron,

I understand all that.

Tex started this thread about alternatives to variac, so I thought if UPS can adjust output voltage, we could use it for that purpose. For now, I want to establish if UPS can correct low and high voltage conditions without using the battery.

I don't care much about original, or manufacturer's external battery packs for now.  If I ever end up using core UPS functionality, I know I will have to worry about extra batteries.

Thank you,

Miroslav

I don't need a UPS for my roasters.

My original question was about regulating line voltage, because I'm not sure if my standby generator produces perfectly level voltage.

Tex,
If higher quality UPS, that we can now get close to nothing, offers good line voltage regulation, it might be a good replacement for the variac.  Is the regulation good enough - this is yet to be determined.  I will do some experiments within a month or so when I get both variac and UPS.
Core UPS functionality is just a plus, it can be used if needed.

Maybe, but when a hurricane or the zombie apocalypse happens a UPS just won't do. ;D

Provided that you can get a gas...
Twenty years ago I was unfortunate to waste 5 years of my life in a war zone, and back then I built battery pack from discarded diesel-electric locomotive batteries that I picked up from industrial garbage.  Small 800W inverter was a life saver. Dead neon lamps were very useful.
Having diversified sources helps a lot.

In my lifetime I've been through eight major hurricanes, each of which knocked out residential electricity for 1 - 6 weeks; but the natural gas supply was never affected. So unless we're invaded by space aliens, or fuel hungry Yankees from Wisconsin, my generator should provide all the power I need. 8)

Gas = natural gas, or gas = gasoline...  That is the question.

Right.  I though of gasoline.  Natural gas generator is a good idea.

Or methane as a byproduct of eating so much cheese? ;D
